Readers’ Workshop: This week we learned that Good Readers:
  • make a resolution to get stronger in reading
  • know how to pick a just right book
  • warm up before they read by taking a picture walk and thinking about the story
  • make sure that the reading sounds right and makes sense
  • look for patterns in their book
Writers’ Workshop: This week we learned that Good Writers:
  • finish the incomplete pieces in their writing folder
  • share their favorite writing with their buddy
  • make a resolution to get stronger at writing
Math: We are finishing up our unit on measurement. We learned about standard (inch) and non-standard measurement (cubes, blocks, links, etc.), weight, capacity, and order.

Social Studies: We read about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and discussed his importance.  We also finished up our unit on shelters & homes.

Today we had our first lockdown/code blue drill.  This is when we sit quietly in the classroom; away from windows and doors until the drill is over.  We talked about the drill during morning meeting, and then the students practiced it during Art with Mrs. Kawaii.

Have a great weekend!

Happy New Year!

We had an exciting week in Kindergarten!  Everyone returned to school with stories to tell about their vacation.

Writing Workshop - Good Writers revise and "fancy-up" their writing for publication.  Each student chose a Small Moment story to revise and share with the class.

Reading Workshop - Good Readers use all they know while reading independently, with a buddy and with a small group!  This week, we focused on retelling stories in detail.

Math - We have been working on measurement!  At the beginning of the week, students used manipulatives - cubes, links, paper clips, and blocks, to measure items around the room.  Then, each student made an inch worm ruler and began measuring items using their ruler.

Word Study - Each student started working with a new sort during word study centers.  We also learned some new games!

Sight Words - New sight words were added to each student's sight word ring throughout the week.  A list of personal sight words was also sent home.

Social Studies - We discussed the importance of animals and people having a shelter/home.  We talked about the characteristics of shelters and homes, and the steps that are taken to create a safe home.

REMINDERS:
- Please send two snacks to school with your child.
- Dress warmly in preparation for outdoor recess - winter coats, gloves, hat.
