REMINDERS:

No School on Thursday, April 11th and Friday, April 12th - Kindergarten Orientation!
Have a great April break!

This week in Writing Workshop we started working on Informational books!  Each student made a list of topics that he/she knows All About.  Currently, most of the class is working on an All About Me book.  They are including information about their family, favorites, and physical appearance.

During Reading Workshop we are working on Tackling Tricky Words.  We made a list of the following strategies we should use when we come to a tricky word.
When you get to a tricky word, you should:
1. STOP!
2. Look at the picture - what would make sense?
3. Get your mouth ready and say the first letter sound. f
4. BLEND:  Say the first two letter sounds. fl
5. CHUNK:  Look for words you know.  at
6. Re-Read: Does it make sense?  Flat

Shared Reading: We read a poem about April.  We found our sight words.
Sight Words:  Individual words went home earlier this week.

Math:  We reviewed patterning, money and making combinations of numbers.  Continued to take inventory of items in the classroom.

Social Studies:  Our 2nd Steps lesson focused on Empathy.  We talked about how to understand how a person's feeling by looking at their facial expression and body language.  We talked about what we can say and how to help a person who is having unhappy feelings.

Happy Spring!  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Reminders:
Kindergarten orientation is scheduled for April 11th and 12th.  Kindergartners will not have school on those days.

During Reading Workshop we have all been growing as readers!  We use our superpowers to...
  • Solve tricky words!
  • Find sight words in a snap!
  • Make predictions and connections.
  • Think about what would make sense.
Sight Words: New sight words were added to each student's sight word ring, and individual lists will be sent home on Tuesday, April 2nd.

During Writing Workshop...
  • We fixed and fancied-up our How To Stories!
  • We added detail to our illustrations.
  • We made sure our stories made sense.
  • We had "free choice" writing and got to choose if we wanted to write a Small Moment story, Pattern Book, or another How To story.
During Math we completed our Cathy Fosnot Unit on Collecting and Organizing.  We took inventory of many items in the classroom and discussed different strategies for counting each item.  We also reviewed making combinations of numbers.  Feel free to have your child inventory items at home!
