This Week in Kindergarten!

Hello Families!

This week in Kindergarten we talked about Johnny Appleseed.  Many of the students shared their apple picking experiences.

During Reading Workshop, we continued to make predictions and think about what will happen next in the story.  We also learned more about our classroom library!  The class sorted bins of books and practiced taking books in and out of the library.  Today, they decorated their very own book bags.  Eventually, they will keep their Just Right books and Sight Word rings in their book bags.

During Writing Workshop, we talked about how recalling important people, places and events help us to collect ideas for stories.  Students wrote several stories about the special people, places and events in their lives.

In math, we are finished our unit on sorting and started identifying and creating patterns.  What fun!

We are continuing to work on learning our Word Study routine. This week, we practiced rotating from center to center independently.  The students also practiced using their notebooks to cut and paste a sort.

Handwriting - Our letter this week was "Ll."

Reminders:
  • Please send in Box Tops for Education!
  • Please send in any magazines that can be used in class.
  • We will happily accept items for our craft bin.
  • Your child will be bringing home his/her individualized set of sight words next week!  Please help your child to visiually recall his/her sight words.

Hello!
It was great seeing everyone at Open House.  We had a busy week in Kindergarten.  Here are some things that are happening in class.

During reading workshop we learned that good readers...
  • point to pictures to help tell the story
  • look at details of the pictures
  • think about how the character is feeling
  • notice the action in the pictures
In writing workshop we learned that good writers...

  • independently get and use their writing tools
  • keep their writing in a folder
  • think of an idea before writing
  • add action to their story
In math we are continuing to sort/classify objects, people, clothing, shapes, food etc.  Please take time to sort things at home!

During word study we practiced using our notebooks for word sorts.  We will continue to work on our center "routine." The initial assessment is complete and students started working in small groups.

We are learning to be part of a kindergarten community and have talked about our feelings and expected vs. unexpected behaviors in the classroom!

Have a great weekend!

Our First Full Week in Kindergarten!

Hello Families,
We had another fantastic week in Kindergarten!  Each day we discover a little bit more about our classroom.  During reading workshop we have been talking about good reading habits.  We have practiced sitting hip to hip with a reading buddy.  We look at the cover of the book and think to ourselves “What will the story be about?”
Everyone did a wonderful job creating their heart for their writing folder.  I hope they will help generate creative ideas during writing workshop.  This week we talked about how good authors think of a story, draw their story, and then write their story.
In math, we are sorting and classifying objects.  We have been looking for similarities between objects, and then deciding which objects don’t belong.
During social studies we discussed expected behavior in Kindergarten.  We talked about being part of a safe and friendly community.  We came up with some really good rules, so we posted them in our classroom.

1.     We are kind and caring friends.
2.     We raise our hand to share ideas.
3.     We always do our best work.
4.     We keep our hands and feet to ourselves.
5.     We remember to have fun while we learn!

REMINDERS:
·        Open House will be on Thursday September 22 from 7:35-8:05.
·        Please send in an Art smock if you haven’t already.
·        Please send in a weather appropriate change of clothes.  These are not just for “accidents.”  Sometime the playground is wet, or spills happen, and students don’t want to stay in damp clothes all dayJ

Have a wonderful weekend!
